Rug Pattern

Above is my completed surface design, above the references I took to help inspire my ideas.

I took most of my photos while taking a walk downtown. For the first time I really noticed most buildings do not have very complex surface design. It made me appreciate the few structures that did experiment with some surface design to set it apart.

I guess I have an affinity for designs that swirl. I really liked the reference photo I took on the bottom right of my idea board. I wanted to come up with a design that churned in on itself... almost hard for the eye to look at, like a psychedelic image. The color pallet was very much inspired by classic Persian rugs, like the one my family used to have as a kid.

To be completely transparent, my first design was very "trippy", but I had to scrap it due to unclean geometry that wouldn't hatch correctly. Something about the arrangement of the pieces made my eyes swim. That was the effect I was going for. I tried my best to recreate the same geometry, but I wasn't able to quite recreate the same "magic".
