Castle for a Rich Snob
I have been waiting a long time to get my hands on a computer powerful enough to run Rhino. The time has finally arrived, and this is my first creation. Our in-class prompt was to make a castle out of simple shapes using the basic skills we learned in our first class. Luckily for me, there's been this little design floating in my mind for a while... actually my first architectural idea ever, etched somewhere on the side of some random piece of paper buried in my closet. This idea has been living loosely in my head for almost two years, as I'm unsure how to capture an idea so accurately with a pencil. I wanted to capture the functionality of a temple, with the rigidity of a castle; a head of mind and state at the same time.
Rhino offers an accurate representation of reality that aids my design process. I used my preliminary two dimensional idea to establish the basis of my three dimensional design. From there the structure builds upon itself as I experimented with the software.
The main issue I had to overcome was the replication of the trusses that cover the base of the structure. Somehow in my amateur state of operation I had my first truss angled slightly to the right... and after duplicating it two more times and lining them up did I see my mistake was very apparent and disappointing. Turns out I hadn't fully taken use of the side view and shift key snapping to perfect angles. Ever since then, my creations have been sitting crisply at perfect angles and ready for replication.
This definitely won't be the last structure I make in Rhino. I can't remember if another architectural design is required for the course I'm taking, but I can see this being my new pastime.
